At some point in your career you may have asked yourself questions like: What if I change my job? Should I pursue another degree? Should I move to another country to study/work? Am I good enough to enter that competition? When answering, self-doubt may have shown up and I think it’s totally fair to have felt this way. Taking these decisions during our careers can be as scary as waiting for those examination results and feedback. However, the result is usually worth it. I asked myself some of these questions and as it turned out … I ended up answering a big YES to them.
I have always been very ambitious with my career goals and I knew I needed to make a big change after I finished my Bachelors degree in Geophysics. I wanted to pursue a Masters degree in Geoscience and found exactly what I wanted… except it was on the other side of the world, meaning I had to leave my family, friends and life in Mexico and move to the UK. I was excited and scared at the same time but I couldn’t have taken a better choice. I said my first big yes to change and it wasn’t long until I got used to my new life. I did great in assessments, laboratory practicals and exams during my masters and achieved a First Class degree (the highest in the UK) which seemed unreachable at the beginning! When I completed my dissertation I got the chance to enter into a national competition where only the best universities in the UK would participate and the best dissertation in geoscience would be awarded. Despite my excellent academic career track, I must say I had second thoughts about participating. I don’t know why but I thought maybe I wasn’t good enough, even more because english is not my first language, how could I have a chance? Nevertheless, I took the chance and said yes, what could I lose? A month later the big announcement was made and my name was there, announced as having the winning scientific project! I felt absolutely thrilled and happy for the result and even more to be the first Latin American woman to be awarded. I was invited to present my work in front of a room full of experts in my field… scary again but I must say this achievement gave a boost to my confident and I accepted the invitation. All I can say now is hard work payed off and taking risks continuously helped me to build a strong self-confidence. Now I’m pursuing a PhD, keen to become a great scientist and certain that I will achieve my current career goals.
My lesson is, the more you dare to change the greater the reward will be. Moving to the UK changed my life, mindset and career goals, I found out I can be very passionate about research and science! Also, I know that with my decision I got to inspire some other people back in Mexico to pursue a similar path, which was even more satisfying to me. So, don’t be afraid, think big and make the change, you never know who can be inspired by you!
